Systema finally expanded their range beyond M16/M4 with the release of the TW5-A4, really an MP5, which is now at RedWolf. The MP5 offering still come in different levels for different budgets. The challenge kit, TW5-A4 and the TW5-A4 MAX. The same fire control unit as was used in previous models has returned but has now been improved to increase reliability. The fire controller also allows for a three-round burst option along side the semi and automatic settings. It seems that the same attention to detail and realism that made a name for Systema in the airsoft community has been applied to this gun. Now you can have ultra-realism no matter what your game, indoor or out. RedWolf posted a review of it in the product information. What are you waiting for, check it out:

Damn!
CRW-Airsoft beat me to building the MGS4 M4 Custom. Not to mention, they did a damn fine job, if you ask me. But don’t take my word for it, take a look for yourself!

Hot damn, she’s sexy!
Great work CRW, and we look forward to more great products from you in the future.
This M4 Custom is Coming Soon - so as soon as it’s available on their site, we’ll post up a link. In the meantime, enjoy the sexy picture.
Cheers all, and great work CRW!

ECHO1USA P90:
Finally, not only another manufacturer makes P90’s, but they are cheap! Everyone’s favourite manufacturer of AEGs for the budget airsofter now is making a P90TR clone, called the E90. Now all we need is a Five-seveN clone!

Tokyo Marui AKS 74U:
TM has jumped on the AKS 74U bandwagon, with this offering featuring their new “recoil engine” (this is the same gearbox found in their AK 74MN). They hope to raise the bar by including an aluminum receiver, but a lack of wood, and a new magazine design that makes it incompatible with all other AK mags may put it short of the VFC model, or even some of the more budget priced versions i.e. the Unicorn AKS 74UN.

UPDATE #2:
I got the SCAR-H in yesterday - the fastest shipping of an AEG in recorded history, I swear. Well, for me, anyways. Thanks goes out to MOPIC for getting it to me blazingly fast.
The original intention of the Trigger Master was to go into my MGS4 M4 Custom project, however I’ve decided to put a Systema Revolution gearbox/motor in it instead. Well, whenever the bloody thing is released, that is.
Why I chose the SCAR-H for the Trigger Master
The SCAR-H and SCAR-L are notorious for not being able to fit a large battery. An 8.4V mini gives the AEG a terrible rate of fire, and the motor sounds like it has to spin up for almost a second on a semi-auto trigger press. I plan on installing a Li-Poly 11.1V 1200mAh battery instead of the conventional 8.4V mini (and upgrade any mechbox internals as necessary), and one of the main selling points of the Trigger Master is that it can control battery consumption, and has a low-battery warning. Because LiPo batteries are sensitive to over discharge, this is a perfect solution to solve the battery problem on a SCAR, while giving yourself the benefits of computer-controlled fire and 3-round bursts.
The “Unboxing“
OK, it wasn’t shipped in a box, but a cardboard envelope. No big deal, right? You tell me. The circuitry hopefully isn’t sensitive to static discharge, because it was shipping in a Ziplock bag, and not a static bag.
Other than that - the documentation included is minimal. Installation guide can be found online here for an M4, or here for an AK. I’m installing the Trigger Master on a SCAR-H (same as an SR-25) and there are no specific instructions for a SCAR-H or SR-25, but the example for the M4 is close enough to what I’m looking for. But that’s the next part of the review.
It would have really been nice to see a hard-copy of the Full Documentation ( <– PDF link) included, so I have a portable record of how to configure the unit on-the-fly. So be prepared to print one off yourself, unless you have a photographic memory and can memorize the programming instructions.
Maybe I missed it, but I’m also looking for the initial “setup”, or “training” instructions for the unit. Once installed, the unit mut be “trained” to your gun. Those instructions are not included, as far as I can tell. These would have been VERY useful - and are included in the Full Documentation. So again, you’ll want to print a copy.
Shipping
Shipping costs are reasonable, packaging is sufficient, and shipping times are acceptable (not out of the ordinary).
First Impressions & Summary - Pre-Installation
First thoughts are fairly positive. Looks good, has lots of extra wire to ensure proper and easy installation. Documentation would be great, but is not shipped with product. Cost is reasonable for what the product offers, and shipping costs are standard.
Next, is the installation…

It should be noted for those keeping score at home, I received my Trigger Master unit on Friday. Hooray!
But wait. I don’t have the gun I’m going to install it on.
The gun is a CA SCAR-H, purchased from a local (Canadian) retailer. Just awaiting on it to arrive, and the review shall commence.
Thanks to Don at Unconventional Airsoft for the fast shipping.

Well this is where I am going to chronicle the building of my RPK project. I’ve already started:
My goal is to come up with something resembling this:

I’m using an Element AK47 metal body as the base for my RPK receiver. I got a custom outer barrel and a real steel bipod.
Anyways, the task was to fill in the lightening (less weight, not electric discharge) grooves on the side of the body, and the first step in this process is sanding:

I scuffed and sanded with automotive pad then used some 320 grit sandpaper to sand the groves and the area around the sling loop hole. I also used a file on the inside of the hole.
The next step was to start filling the grooves. I used a epoxy I got from Lee Valley. Here it is dry and set. It really is hard as the metal. I would actually say it feels like ceramic. Its hard to tell from the pictures but I over filled the holes and have a lot of sanding ahead of me… Oh also on the inside of the body, over the sling hole, a buddy glued a metal piece in with Gorilla Glue.

In the next few days I am going to try to glue on the side reinforcements (like on a real RPK) and finish the epoxying. The next step after that will be to dremmel both the gas tube and the front sight (my madness will prove it self later on, I hope *crosses fingers*). I will take a picture of the epoxy stuff and post that as well. I also have left to order:
metal front set
steel top cover
AK74 type selector switch
I’ve decided to go with King Arms for all of the above, as King Arms AK accessories seem to always have a very nice finish.
Still a lot of work ahead of me. Wish me luck all…

Filed under · AEG, Airsoft, Jing Gong, MGS4: M4 Custom
Well, I have an abundance of time on my hands, and I am completely in love with MGS4.
So, I’ve decided to take on a new project to re-create an airsoft version of the M4 Custom from MGS4. Parts are already on order, and should be here soon. I have also alreay selected a “base” gun for the project - the Jing Gong M4 S-System.
I looked through dozens of websites, hundreds of products, and almost fifty different manufacturers before I came to my final parts list.
To save some of the surprise, I’m not going to post the full list - but rather take it as I assemble it.
So far - progress is slow - as all i have the base gun, the Jing Gong M4 S-System. Parts are on order - so it’s a waiting game until they arrive.
Here is the base gun:

Which I will be turning into:

As you can see from the pistures, the front and rear flip-up sights are already a match, as are the Grip and Buttstock (save, the colour). I’ve chosen not to paint the Grip and Buttstock, but rather order replacements that are injection-molded with the appropriate colour, to prevent paint-chipping should it get struck by a round.
It’s also difficult to tell the colour exactly in the CG render - but in-game screens and cutscenes show it to be pretty close to Tan, and sometimes Dark Earth. I’ve chosen Tan due to the abundance & availability of aftermarket parts - but I may give it another go with a Dark Earth version too.
Original plans were to upgrade everything - including the stock Jing Gong internals - but because this is mostly just a show-piece, I really don’t care how reliably she fires. Should it ever go up for sale, internals can be upgraded upon request (for a nominal fee, of course).
So - stay tuned to see how it comes together. I’ll post my next update when I get more information and products start coming in.
Feel free to leave any feedback or comments on the project.

With the (ever) impending release of the Systema “Revolution” electronic fire-control mechbox, I decided to try a few other fire-control systems before this one comes out.
From Unconventional Airsoft (local in Canada), the Trigger Master AEG Fire Control Unit promises to offer the following:
- 3-round burst which becomes full-auto if the trigger is held down.
- Full computer controlled MOSFET driving of AEG motor, with active braking.
- Overcurrent protection (the unit can safely replace the AEG fuse)
- Ease of installation (the unit is the same size as a standard fuse holder)
- Full PWM motor control to maintain a constant performance, and reduce motor and drive train stress.
- Firing modes, burst timing, and rate-of-fire are all programmable by the user.
- Thermal protection (temperature monitoring, notification of user of overtemperature condition)
- Over- and under-voltage protection and warning.
- Open sourced hardware and software design allowing modification and upgrades if you so wish.
- Custom programming and features available from Unconventional-Airsoft.
The unit is on order, and should be here shortly. I’ll begin the review with the installation process.
My vantage point is from that of a novice AEG upgrader (I’ve done gearbox dis-assembly, and re-assembly - successfully, I might add), but limited gearbox/AEG electrical work. While I’m not afraid to get my hands dirty & improvise where necessary, I can definitely follow a set of instructions - which will be reviewed as well.
It’s my firm belief that any airsofter that know his/her way around a gearbox should be able to install an upgrade like this - so we’ll put it to the test.
