AngryRP from the GasGuns.info Community posted a link to a WE M4 Wiki page that answers a question I get asked weekly. Sad to say, the answer wasn’t clear to me either, until now.

Now, keep in mind, this is an open-source Wiki, and the information you read on the Internet isn’t always true – but the page makes a lot of sense, and corroborates many things I’ve learned along the way.
